Geometric Stars Pattern: Step by Step Tutorial

Today I’ll show you how to draw this geometric stars pattern with a step by step tutorial. You’ll find it easy to follow even if you’re a beginner because you won’t have to draw complicated shapes. Just some straight lines with the help of dotted paper are more than enough to create something you can be proud of. Let’s get into it!

Step 1: Sketch a square grid.

Use any kind of pencil to draw a square grid using the dots to help you. Each square should be 9 dots x 9 dots. You’ll use these auxiliary lines as a reference in the next steps, but won’t be visible in the final result.

Step 2: Draw 8-point stars.

geometric stars pattern tutorial step 2

Grab a black fineliner (I used a Sakura Pigma Micron 05) and draw an 8-point star inside each of the grid’s squares. I recommend you to focus on one star at a time and then replicate it inside all the other squares.

Step 3: Divide the geometric stars into parts.

geometric stars pattern tutorial step 3

Connect half of each stars’ vertexes with their centers using pairs of crosses. You can use the same fineliner as in the previous step.

Step 4: Divide each part in half.

At this point you should have each star divided into 8 sections. Now you have to divide each of those sections in half, connecting the vertexes with their centers.

Step 5: Draw tiny diamonds.

Draw tiny diamond shapes in between the stars. I only drew a diamond in every other square, but you can fill them all if you want to. Now divide each diamond into 8 parts using diagonals.

You can also erase the pencil grid you sketched in the first step.

Step 6: Decorate the pattern stars.

Now it’s time to decorate the stars! Grab a fineliner with a smaller tip (I used a Sakura Pigma Micron 01) and fill in every other section using parallel lines. I recommend you to always make the lines parallel to one of the section’s sides.

This will give the pattern a really cool 3D effect.

Step 7: Decorate the diamonds.

Repeat the same process with the diamonds: fill in every other section using dense parallel lines.
