What is the RONCHAMP tangle?

RONCHAMP is a geometric/abstract Zentangle pattern built from irregular, cell-like shapes separated by bold white “walls”. It plays with the idea of three-dimensionality using a few simple elements to create a sense of depth.

This tangle feels architectural and structured. The bold black areas make it feel like there’s something else beyond, a feature that’s very interesting to play with.

The inspiration behind my tangle RONCHAMP

This pattern is inpired by the iconic Notre-Dame du Haut, a chapel designed by Le Corbusier in Ronchamp (France).

I first found out about this building while studying Architecture, and there’s one detail that caught my eye: the facade with its irregular openings of different sizes scattered across a thick wall.

Ronchamp translates that feeling into a Zentangle pattern, turning architectural inspiration into a meditative drawing.

How to draw this Zentangle tile step by step:

If you’d like to learn how to draw a full Zentangle tile using Ronchamp, I’ve created a detailed step-by-step PDF tutorial inside my Pattern School, Zentopia.

There you’ll not only learn how to build the pattern from scratch, but also how to explore variations in shape and rhythm to turn it into a more organic composition.
