1 | What are geometric Zentangle patterns?

If you’re new to the Zentangle Method: welcome! Zentangle is an art style based on drawing easy patterns (called tangles) to promote relaxation, creativity and focus. If you want a deeper intro, check out my post: What is Zentangle?.

Some tangles are organic and free-flowing. Others, like the ones featured here, are geometric: built with straight lines and simple shapes (squares, triangles, circles, diamonds and other repeated forms). They’re often arranged on a grid.

Geometric Zentangle patterns are ideal for:

  • Beginners who want structure to avoid blank page fear.
  • Artists who enjoy symmetry and balance.
  • Anyone looking to learn more with Zentangle online classes or step by step tutorials, really!

2 | Here’s 8 easy geometric Zentangle patterns (with step by step drawing guides)

Let me share a selection with 8 of my favorite geometric Zentangle patterns, with tutorials so you can start drawing right away! They’re all different from each other because I wanna show off their potential, open your mind and prove there’s so much variety beyond the classic square grids.

A) How to draw BLINKT step by step:

▶️ Tangle BLINKT by Jennifer Hohensteiner.

✏️ Why I chose it:
If I had to choose one geometric tangle to get started, it’d be this one! The lines are crisp and angular but its structure is quite flexible. It has no grid, which makes it accessible for beginners who want to draw without too much structure.

B) How to draw CRAC step by step:

▶️ Tangle CRAC by me, Mario Patterns. Tutorial included in my FREE Zentangle Workbook.

✏️ Why I chose it:
Squared grids are fundamental to building a lot of geometric tangles. And so versatile! Changing what you draw inside each fragment can alter the final result dramatically. CRAC is an easy option to get familiar with these squared grids.

C) How to draw TRICKLE step by step:

▶️ Tangle TRICKLE by Ela & Tom Rieger.

✏️ Why I chose it:
Triangular grids are another great option to get started. They are more flexible than square ones. Changing the size and orientation of these triangles can give the tangle a very playful outlook.

D) How to draw TWEAK step by step:

▶️ Tangle TWEAK by Jacqui Bull.

✏️ Why I chose it:
You can also create really interesting grids with straight lines crossing the tile in different directions. The resulting fragments are very randomly sized, which adds a lot of movement.

E) How to draw PEZEMBER step by step:

▶️ Tangle PEZEMBER by Peter Fruehwirt.

✏️ Why I chose it:
This is an example of what we call seed tangles, which start off with tiny shapes that are scattered across the tile (usually following a square grid). By connecting these seeds in different ways we can achieve really interesting tangles. A great introduction to more advanced geometric tangling!

F) How to draw CARVED LATTICE step by step:

▶️ Tangle CARVED LATTICE by Diana Marshall.

✏️ Why I chose it:
Shading is such a key step for geometric tangles, because it can add volume and make them three-dimensional. In this example, we’re adding this 3D element to a grid where the triangles are a bit separated, instead of forming a continuous texture.

G) How to draw JEXIC step by step:

▶️ Tangle JEXIC by Cindy Knapp.

✏️ Why I chose it:
The amount of drama (this is, black ink) is another element we can use to play around with our geometry. This strong white & black contrast pairs so well with structured patterns, creating super interesting optical illusions.

H) How to draw AUSEKLIS step by step:

▶️ Tangle AUSEKLIS by Rita Nikolajeva.

✏️ Why I chose it:
Instead of using a grid, this radial tangle starts from the center and moves outward. It’s a great way to explore mandala-like designs with a geometric twist.

3 | Some tips for drawing geometric Zentangle patterns

Geometric tangles may look clean and structured, but remember: this is still Zentangle. The focus is on mindful drawing, not perfection. Wonky angles or uneven spacing are all part of what makes your tile yours, so embrace them!

Here’s some tips that will help you make your lines intentional even if they’re not 100% straight:

▶️ Rotate your tile (a lot).

This might be the most underrated tip in Zentangle. Turning your tile helps you keep a steady hand and a natural stroke direction. If a line feels shaky, rotate the tile until your hand can flow more easily.

▶️ Find your most natural stroke direction.

Everyone has a sweet spot when it comes to drawing straight lines. For some (myself included) it’s from top to bottom, like pulling a rope towards you. For others it’s pulling diagonally across the page. There’s no right way, so notice what works best for you! Combine this tip with with the previous one for optimal results.

▶️ Lightly sketch with pencil (if you want to).

While the Zentangle Method usually skips the pencil altogether, I think it’s totally fine to sketch a few guidelines at the beginning if it helps you get the structure in place. After that you’ll feel much more confident to keep tangling directly with ink lines.

▶️ Sync your breath with your lines.

Here’s a secret that can turn your tangling into true mindfulness: breath with your strokes. Inhale as you prepare the line, exhale as you draw it. Or inhale when you draw lines upwards, exhale when you draw lines downwards. Resist the urge to rush and find your breathing cadence, it will calm down the nervous system and bring your attention into the present moment.

▶️ Don’t skip the shading.

Shading is what brings geometric tangles to life, turning them from flat into dimensional illusions. A little bit of pencil and blending tool will make your lines pop and feel sculptural!

4 | Why you should try geometric tangles

Geometric tangles are my favorites for a reason: they just feel so good to draw.

For me, it all comes down to the sense of structure. It’s so satisfying to lay down a tidy grid and use a few repeated stroked to turn it into a complex-looking design. Geometric tangles often look way more complicated than they are, and that’s the beauty of them.

This repetition leads to relaxation and stress relief: the steps are easy to follow because you know what’s coming next, and that makes the process particularly meditative and satisfying. If improvisation feels overwhelming to you, geometric patterns are a perfect place to play and build your confidence.
